Changing Lives through Information in Central America

Progress in our Girl Reader Program

by riecken_admin | February 20, 2012

A recent visit to the Riecken library, Biblioteca Comunitaria Rija’tzuul Na’ooj, in San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala to see the progress of young girls who have gotten excited about reading, was very rewarding.  Central America continues to have very high illiteracy rates especially among indigenous women and girls.   There is a belief that girls don’t need to read or be educated in order to raise children and work in the home.  The Riecken libraries encourage reading by all children with a special emphasis on the girls.

San Juan La Laguna, a nice place to read

Several girls came to the library after school to demonstrate to visitors their reading and comprehension skills. Interestingly, the youngest one, Fatima (7) who has just started the second grade was the best reader in the group. She has also had the most exposure to the library and its programming.  The other girls ranging in age from 8 to 9 were reading at a somewhat less advanced level but with enthusiasm and comprehension.  They engaged in a conversation about why reading was important and replied that if they were able to read then they could learn anything they wanted to learn.  In addition, they added that they were able to help their parents who are not able to read.

Fatima, age 7, second grade, is ready for the reading challenge.

Rosa, age 9, fourth grade explained why learning to read was important.

Juanita, age 9, fourth grade is reading below grade level, needs additional support.

Fatima was the star reader of the group and was also able to talk about what she had read.

Can you help these girls and many more just like them improve their reading skills and also their self-confidence and educational potential?  Every dollar allows us to build sustainable skills in young girls in Central America.  Please just click on the “Give Now” button on the Global Giving Girl Reader link on the right side of this blog.  Muchas gracias!
